There's just no stopping Never Ceese!

An aspiring author friend of mine purchased Never Ceese for his wife for Christmas. As many fans often do, she e-mailed me to let me know that she was reading it and loving and then e-mailed me to tell me just how much she enjoyed it. So without further ado, her short but sweet review/email to me. ;)

Thoroughly enjoyed the book! Definitely will be saving up to get Forever Richard asap. :) I actually finished it while traveling (and I NEVER read in the car)!

Her husband is Keven Newsome author of Winter and another writer looking to get his work out there. You can check him out here.

Thank you so much DeAnna and thank you Keven for ordering.

Happy New Year!

Sue's New Years Hopes.

Sue's New Years hopes.

1. That Never Ceese will get picked up by a "real" publisher as I can't afford to pay what a "real" publisher has to pay for "real" distribution. Don't get me wrong, Lightning Source is wonderful. But the POD stigma isn't.

2. That readers come to realize that the label Christian Fiction, for the most part, only represents work coming from an exclusive denominational market and YES, that's a problem.

3. Did I mention that I hope Never Ceese gets picked up by a "real" publisher?"

4. That readers continue to enjoy the stories I put out.

5. That Never Ceese win the 2009 Pluto Award. Actually even if it doesn't, I'm proud it made it as far as it did. I just wanted to have five things to list. LOL

So there ya go. ;)

As you can see, I don't have many hopes! Not really.

2009 Pluto Award finalists and Never Ceese!

Even with the teasing *and you know who you are ;)* I'd managed not to think about the finalists being listed today for the 2009 Pluto Awards, 12-23-09, or at least I'd forgotten it enough to be shocked when I saw the three finalists. Yes. Shocked! LOL

A story surrounding the lives of a werewolf and a vampire--a finalists in an award ceremony for Sci-Fi? Now I'll have nightmares trying to figure out how to market this little gem of a series. LOL Not to mention that this award is symbolic of what Christian readers want to see, a market whose industry won't talk about any author coming from outside their exclusive fee-paying publishers nor will they allow their authors to mention such authors in interviews etc . . . Ah, but this isn't the time for soapbox dancing. ;)

Never Ceese, short-listed in 2006 for a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel has moved on to be a finalist at the 2009 Pluto Awards! Lest we forget, for Richard's sake, Forever Richard was nominated as well.

Absolutely amazing to me and thank-you to all who voted. You made my Christmas!

God Bless you everyone!

Ceese and Richard fly to Singapore and Malaysia for Christmas!

Ceese and Richard fly to Singapore and Malaysia this Christmas as a result of two instances where I offered interested individuals a free autographed book of Never Ceese due to having POD distribution and the stigma that goes along with it. Not even having a traditional publisher first seems to help fight this stigma. Sad. Very sad. Sorry to any other interested parties. While I'd love to comply, it's simply too financially draining.

You should have no trouble getting Forever Richard though thanks to the Writers' Cafe Press. ;)

So order away.

Merry Christmas, Charlene and Aik!

Your copies went out today 12-21-09.

Oh Ha! Like I'd ever quit writing. ;)

What a telling message sent to me via e-mail after my last post. A fellow author, possibly the next big thing, (but you readers will never know because his money and ambition will dry up long before you ever see one of his novels) reflected on how my blog about my career so mirrored his.

I would like to emphasize that sales through my traditional publisher seem to be doing just fine, I just won't know how fine until it's time to see who actually bought books and who didn't so I've no reason to believe things won't keep moving forward. I suppose if there were a point to my last blog it would be that readers will never be able to support small publishers enough so that they can compete with larger publishers, (yeah, the gap is THAT big) so we have to scream extra loud. In case you didn't know it most authors don't like the marketing aspect at all and really don't enjoy talking about their work and what it is or isn't doing. I'm a loud-mouth exception so get used to that.

On the other hand, Never Ceese has already been nominated for a second award and Forever Richard it's first. So there are a few others who think what I write is worthy of sharing/buying/supporting. Just know that us small authors usually have to do writing as a part-time job and sometimes even less than that as for the first few years we're having to put money out and that's even if you have a traditional author who does help!!! Egads!

Sooooo, if you want to see Cyn No More sooner, just buy more of Never Ceese and Forever Richard. ;) Then I can dedicate more time writing and less time finding other ways to make a living.

So there ya go!

My carreer as a so called author--so far.

With the end of the year, or beginning of a new one depending on how you want to look at things, approaches, I find myself re-evaluating my new career choice.

Is it playing out as I expected?

Is it paying out as I hoped it might?

Is there any real reason to keep going or should I just pull out now?

To address the first question I must first say that my expectations were rather low to begin with. I simply wanted to share my stories with others and being traditionally published seemed the best route to take. I have to say I was encouraged when my professionally edited (my money) MS caught the eye of a traditional, though small, press right away especially after hearing the odds of this happening. Excited when my debut novel was short-listed for a Bram Stoker award not over a year later and honored to be an invited guest of Nicholas Grabowsky at the 2007 World Horror Convention. I was even tickled to learn that my debut novel about a vampire and a werewolf was chosen by readers as the book club choice of the month of April 2007 at the American Christian Fiction Writers association (even though I dropped my membership a year later after learning this was as far as the ACFW would go to support non-affiliated Christian authors.)

Yes, it did seem I might actually make back the money I'd put out so far to get picked up by a traditional press. But my publisher was small and while they printed 5000 books (got them printed cheap in China) they had no marketing plan whatsoever. So far though, I'd done ALL my marketing and was just grateful to have the distribution (through Baker & Taylor.) But the small press collapsed without notice and liquidated most of their books including all of my hardback!

Because of all the work (and money. First publisher actually did very little other than printing the books) I'd put into marketing, I was able to find another traditional press rather quickly. And moved up to a mid-range publisher. This of course takes me to my second question.

Is it paying out as I hoped it might? Well since I only hoped to make enough to cover what I'd put out already, I can honestly say the answer would be no. The advances were industry standard but to date, that's the only money I've seen from either book. I understand that smaller presses pay out when they get paid which doesn't start happening until roughly 6 to 9 months after a book is "published." That's when the bookstores cough up the dough to distributors or return books they decided they didn't want after all. Perhaps money made from my second book, which of course I haven't seen yet because my publisher hasn't been paid, will be encouraging but the odds that whatever I earn will cover what I've put out are probably about as astronomical as the odds of finding a traditional press right out of the gate. So on to my third question.

Is there any real reason to keep going or should I pull out now? Hmm . . . let's see. My first book was published in 2006, second one in 2009. Both have garnished a LOT of wonderful attention but last time I checked garnishing attention doesn't exactly pay the bills now does it.

So as I venture forth into a new year with the hopes of another book coming soon I have to wonder, will I actually sell enough to justify calling writing a career?

Hmmmm . . .

Amazon rocks? Say it ain't so!

I know. Ain't it something. So I've been going round and round with them to display the paperback of Never Ceese which is in print instead of the hardback of Never Ceese which isn't in print and is no longer something I make any money off of AND they finally did it!!! Okay so it took like about 50 e-mails back and forth, give or take 10 or 20 BUT they did it.

Then after telling me that they wouldn't remove the bundling option from my book page nor would they stop bundling books with mine that come through exclusive Christian publishers who don't support non-affiliated Christian authors such as myself, THEY DID IT! Well they didn't remove the option but they did bundle my book with another one of MY books.

How cool is that?

Way cool!

Thank you so much Amazon, if that means anything to you. ;)

Forever Richard Sold out!

Maybe Forever Richard has sold out its first print run. It seems quite a few sites are showing temporarily out of stock. Well, Merry Christmas to me I guess. ;) I've got a very few copies left myself and will call and check to see if I can get more soon. In the meantime, I'd buy myself a copy or two if I were you.

Why heck, I'd buy 'em all!!!

I'm happy to report!

I'm happy to report that paperbacks of Never Ceese are selling quite well in the U.K. as I just got my report from Ingram for sales this month. So very excited about this and can't wait to see how well they're selling here in the US. Perhaps seeking a traditional publisher to help with distribution won't be necessary at all. How exciting is that?

Amazon out of stock-at Christmas? What?

Sad to say that Amazon has done it again. Smaller than larger traditional presses and otherwise still get no help from Amazon whatsoever. Here we at Christmas time, the time of the season us authors look forward to when it comes to selling books and what do you know, Amazon is out of stock of Forever Richard!

Nope. There's no reason whatsoever why they sould be. They can get the book right away and with no problem. Why would they ever show it as out of stock then especially at Christmas? Because I don't have one of the larger publishers and therefore they don't care. The good news is Forever Richard is now selling through Amazon's affiliate sellers. The downside to that would be that these sales aren't reflected in the rankings thus making the ranking system here on Amazon seem a bit bogus.

Ah Amazon. Us smaller published authors traditional an otherwise can always count on you!

Good grief.

Local Books-A-Million - RAWKS!!!

Updated 11-12-10

The copies of Forever Richard my local BAM has are actually just returned-from-the-bookstore books that were sent back to the distributor (most likely Ingram) after BookMasters, my publishers distributor, oversold my publishers books for a commission. BAM's only sell returned-from-the-bookstore books. These book were supposed to come back to my publisher. They didn't yet my publisher had to pay for returns they never saw and are currently be sold at BAM. Buy them if you like but until Black Bed Sheet Books puts out the next copy of Forever Richard I prefer you simply buy the book from me here on this blog. If you see any of my books in any BAM just understand I don't ever see any of the money and surprisingly neither does my publisher or rather ex-publisher though I only call them that because they returned the rights of Forever Richard to me. Love them. But no, I'm not about to beg for a booksigning at a store when I make nothing off the books sold and never will.

Local Books-A-Million - RAWKS!!!

OMG! Back in September I think it was, I walked in to my local Books-A-Million on I-55 North in Jackson, Mississippi and spoke with Jonathon, curious about what it would take to get them to shelve my books in the regional section. Before I could finish asking, Jonathan informed me he'd ordered 20 of Forever Richard. I threw my hands up. "No!" I said. Five or six but not twenty. If they don't sell you'll send them back to the distributor and my publisher will actually EAT the books." He smiled graciously and told me they never send books back but he did cut the order to ten.

I went back to that Books-A-Million two days ago and looked for my book. I couldn't find it. Had Jonathan lied. But I checked with Ingram when he said he ordered and sure enough there was an order of ten. I spoke with Jonathan yesterday. All ten copies had sold. PLUS he'd ordered ten copies of Never Ceese at the same time and they sold. My local Books-A-Million sold twenty of my books in less than two months time!

Needless to say, I think a book-signing is in order.

I'm setting one up now and will let you know more when all the details are worked out.

What a Merry Christmas!

Pluto Award Nomination! TWO BOOKS!

Pluto Award Nomination! Say it once say it twice either way it's sweeeet! Somehow I have to forget about this now so I don't worry endlessly about the outcome. *Sue biting nails.* Well, at least I'm not biting necks. ;)

This is local support!!!

Perhaps the Ridgeland Barnes & Noble who has yet to pay me or another author for a book signing in April 2009 and who fails to keep my books in stock should certainly pay attention to this. Locally owned an Independent bookstore, in Ridgeland Mississippi, goes out of their way to support local authors. The Bookshelf at 637 Hwy 51 is presently featuring Forever Richard on their very impressive web site. Better still, they have both of my books in stock and they're all autographed. Even better, if they run low, they can call me and I'll be right up to resupply them. How cool is that?!

Dang cool!

Check it out below or click here.
